UPDATE: This item is no longer available. However, I'm adjusting the post to keep it up for information content.

Recently, I decided to sell a rather nice Microman piece from my collection: the
battery-powered Microman Blizzard B-3 Vesta and its Mystery Jet. Since I spent a little bit of time with the item, here are some pictures and thoughts to share about this rather unusual piece in the Microman line.

This is a
deluxe boxed set from the original Microman line, 1980. One of four Blizzard Micromen, Vesta was one
of two that were also released as a deluxe figure & vehicle set. GiG released one of the other Blizzard
Microman toys in the Italian Micronauts line.
This Microman edition is a different color combination than the one GiG
used, and includes a large blue jet with motorized action, in addition to two
spinning disk weapons. The Blizzard
Micromen developed large, armored bodies and deep-cold weaponry as an
adaptation to the part of space they fled to after the destruction of the
Microman homeworld - a part of space with intense magnetic fields.

The toys feature a battery-powered motor that
creates a vibration that causes the Blizzard to 'hover' on the unique
structures built into the heavy armored figure's feet, and to launch spinning
blades from the huge cannon it holds.
Also, the Blizzard's legs can be removed and it can be attached into the
Mystery Jet, where the motorized action makes the jet move in the classic
bump-and-go 'mystery action'. Have races
with Battle Cruiser! (Shown for size comparison is one of the latter original series Microman figures contemporary to Blizzard, although he isn't included with the set.)

On the surface, the Blizzards seem a bit of a diversion from the usual Micro line, but that may be the perspective from the Micronauts side of the property, which didn't have the wide range of battery-operated giant robot toys that the Microman portion of the line did. However, the toy proved somewhat unpopular in Japan as well. While it still fetches good prices in the collector market due to its original price point and larger size, it doesn't attract nearly the desire of piece like Mecha Acroyear, the latter Robotman [aka Biotron] variation and such.

Blizzard also includes the famous 1980 "Catarog" which features several
large pages of great manga-style Microman story and history.

Mego passed up the chance, but Micronauts collector and craftsman Austin Richards has developed just the thing: Flight Commander!!! This is a carefully designed resin cast, fully functioning and fully Micro-compatible figure modelled after Force Commander and based on the Microman Jeeg figure. You can order one of the small quantity available with the information at his blog here:
Austin's craftsmanship is meticulous and first-rate. On in hand makes you think you have a lost prototype of an unproduced Micronaut. You can see here with his much-admired, similarly designed ROBOID. Go get one!
Today, many of us are also aware of the sad fate of Bill Mantlo - the writer who brought us an amazing, complex science fiction epic told in the pages of a comic book series that continued long after Micronauts left the toy stores and even after the Mego Corporation closed its doors and left the toy industry. The driven, energetic man's life as a comic book writer and full-time Legal Aid Society lawyer ended when he was struck by hit-and-run driver who left Mantalo with traumatic brain injuries from which his body and intellect has never recovered.

A detailed look at Mantlo's life, injury and long, tragic road afterward was surprisingly offered recently by LifeHealthPro - a website and on-line journal for the US health insurance industry:

"Bill Mantlo was a legendary writer for Marvel Comics in the 1970s and 1980s. But today, he inhabits a broken body abandoned by both the health insurance industry and the federal healthcare reform meant to help people like him. This is his story."

Tragic Tale - from LifeHealthPro

Bill Mantlo's tale is indeed tragic and difficult to read, and certainly - under the pen of LifeHealthPro's author - impossible to not consider even more acutely (by myself at least) in the light of the United States' current cultural and political re-assessment of privatized, corporate health care in our society.

Give it a read and some thought - the respect due a man who brought a great deal to many of our childhoods, but who lives now having lost so much.AcroRayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949450347665210583noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1890687187683893053.post-10786348462243397132011-11-06T20:22:00.004-06:002011-11-06T20:31:22.539-06:00A long-lost piece of Micronauts history finally revealed...Several years ago, collector Austin Richards acquired several drawings of unproduced Micronauts toys: elaborate expansion sets for the Rocket Tubes system. Meaning that the form of the final products these items are delivered to toy store shelves as might look and read absolutely nothing like this. I'd say that things are - as we're all aware - still in development and subject to approval. So, what does this say to those of us eager to know what Micronauts will look like next?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 311px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHYB7-YpgXcjTElqg9Cfy6U_f5NijEaRVMtSYjCi1ejVeMAs56HK4wZ3OWQwEUicXgVIOEwM8f0CiiFLujkgXEIglUMSk1EhYP660r8rE7qRP1skMLrAIW4JCWsnN21R46MXtfKvy5xb9A/s400/18-19-Micronauts+Blogsize.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5665620969287993362" />

Judging by the mish-mash of styles at work in the Micronauts-related artwork in the issue and in spite of all the color and elaborate linework ... not too very much, in my analysis. But that's not a bad thing. Certainly, there's a lot there that indicates current design styles and classic influences will be there. If the rules-of-thumb we see here will continue to play out in the final products, we'll have figures that will be elaborately textured and colorful like the Micronauts of the past, and Micronaut toys that are largely recognizable as the classic Micronaut characters and toys. One spread (the third image above) shows this new trio of Micronauts relating to GI Joe, Generation 1 Transformers, and the other revitalized Hasbro properties. This suggests to me that perhaps something like the older Takara SF-Land standards might be put into play in the way that original Micronauts, Transformers and other toys originating from - or influenced by (GI Joe RAH?)- Takara can all interchange and play together based on a shared set of mechanical standards and scales. My kids love mixing Micronaut, Microman and Transformers toys and parts together, and populating the results with some other 1/18 scale figures.

My 2-cents? Hasbro and Tomy-Takara may develop Micronauts into something like the Magnepower Microman line combined with the Transformers Human Alliance line.

As a note of trivia - the two-page Micronauts spread is by Italian comic artist Emiliano Santalucia. He's been involved with the recent revitalization of the classic verisons of Transformers, GI Joe and Masters of the Universe for IDW, Hasbro and others. In his spread, astute eyes can see influences pulled from SOTA Toys' abandoned Micronauts:Evolution, Henshin Cyborg, Magnepower Microman, Microforce, and others. The thick stable of past iterations of Micronauts has been used as a resource for this printed work, at least.

It doesn't give us much concrete information to work with, but it will generate a lot of speculation and conversation among fans and collectors, which is a good thing! As they say, even bad press (not to say this is bad in any way!) is better than no press at all.AcroRayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949450347665210583noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1890687187683893053.post-45829624052134681392011-10-20T11:34:00.001-05:002011-10-20T11:34:56.078-05:00Followup on HasbroAcroRayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949450347665210583noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1890687187683893053.post-34112865788648797812011-10-14T00:11:00.008-05:002011-10-15T12:00:53.024-05:00First look at Hasbro's Micronauts, at NYCC?<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb9R9tu050DF0VVOZYD8h33hURqtpKCds8ppTEIIEi523KIJgsQclD7px6d_g0jX-ZtDEMgkhaRW3Fd3Kj8Dfz8-HP1NhU2AdWRSNWJKij7Co4mdzL2ydUqy6K6vC9V7bmy5VEUf2a_q3d/s320/NYCC+UnitE+Micronauts.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5663225017175803794" />

Thanks to Micropolis Embassy member John Kent's keen observations, we've got a look at what is quite possibly Acroyear from Hasbro's upcoming Micronauts line, revealed in artwork promoting Hasbro's "Unit:E" (Unity, get it?) package of properties on display at New York Comicon this weekend. There have been several iterations of the core Micronauts characters in the last few years, generated by subcontractors for AGE as Marty Abrams' company tried to re-launch the property. Kenetic Underground cooked up some appealing stuff for AGE during that period.

I get the distinct impression, however, that the design is based on the Takara Magnepower Arden or LED Acroyears from the end of the 1990s...AcroRayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949450347665210583noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1890687187683893053.post-36003440359746505052011-07-02T23:26:00.015-05:002011-07-02T23:48:19.004-05:00And now, a commercial break…When I was a child, my first exposure to Micronauts was a TV commercial, which showed me the most amazing toys! I’m not certain which commercial it was, but I recall it involved the Astro Station’s double-missile launcher knocking over an Acroyear at one point. I asked my Grandma for “Micronauts!” for my birthday that year, and she got me Astro Station and one each of the four first-series figures. They were absolutely the best toys I ever received for a birthday. After that, I actually looked forward to more Micronauts commercials with the same enthusiasm that I looked forward to the next episode of Speed Racer, Ultraman or Superhost. What thrilling new Micronauts toys would Mego bring me next?

Mego spent significant dollars on Micronauts TV advertising. The company hired DuRona Productions – a film company with a long, active history creating TV advertising for the North American toy industry stretching back to the 1950s – to create colorful, lush commercials presenting the Micronauts toys in play, or to parents with appreciations for good products. Nearly two dozen spots were produced from 1977 through to 1980, beginning with dubbed commercials with stop-motion animation from Japan by Takara, to a last spot for the un-released Iguanos and Equestron toys.

The TV spot I’ve presented above can in particular be appreciated by we grown collectors. It is called “Youngminds”, and the spot targets the ‘adult’ viewer – which is apparent when watched. Mego wasn't just selling toys to kids. But there are a lot of really great figures in the line that at least meet and very often exceed Mego's workmanship, in my experience.

I can advise some "sure-bets" among Palisades' Micronauts as far as reliable quality is concerned, so that collectors don't miss out on a lot of great Micronauts toys. These will give you a good crowd of Micronauts to enjoy shopping for, opening, playing with and maybe - dare I say it - sharing with the kids!

As a general rule, the transparent Micronaut figures were a constant issue for Palisades' Micronauts - which was a shame also since transparent figures were a keystone of the Micronauts' design style. But most of their opaque toys worked out quite nicely. Palisades produced 3 series of Micronauts toys: Series 1, Series 1.5 (which was sold via their web store), and Series 2. Series one has the infamously worst QC by far, but there are even some real winners in that set as well. Some figures in each series also had special editions unique to certain retail and hobby-interest sources.

<span style="color: rgb(0, 102, 0);font-family:times new Each one comes with a stand with pegs for either standard Micronaut feet or the unique Micronaut alien foot socket (even Acroyear and Centaurus, who don't need stands), and lots of new and repro accessories and parts that are typically compatible with the vintage toys for play or repair. You'll often see some competitive bidding for lots of loose Palisades figures on eBay because of this. Also, all Palisades Micronauts were produced in lower quantities than their Mego or GiG counterparts - even Emperor and Red Falcon.

I'll also note that there are a few bugs in even the best of these toys:

Series 2 Pharoids and Galactic Defenders have forearms that are slightly too long, and may force the figures' hands out of their wrist cuffs. Compare them to a vintage figure and trim the forearm back a little with a hobby knife or nail clipper.

Series 2 Red Falcons almost always develop cracks in their clear torso fronts near the screw posts. This seems to be unavoidable.

Series 2 Centaurus may have a loose brain, which may require being glued on or it will fall off easily.

Series 1 & 1.5 Space Gliders have a small flaw in the inner surface of their left shoulder sockets, which may catch as you rotate the shoulder in the torso socket.

Series 1.5 figures (EXCEPT ACROYEAR!) have a rubber tube in their torsos that causes the plastic it touches to melt. This tube provides resistance to the arm rotation and the neck joint. Nearly all hollow-torso Micronauts have this part, but series 1.5's used a grade of rubber that reacts to ABS plastic, unfortunately, quickly causing a melting reaction similar to that seen in vintage 'mushroom missiles', but occurring in months rather than years. The part can be replaced with clear aquarium tubing. (Try it in all your transparent Micronauts for a nice look!) But it takes some careful work to cut it away from the plastic it has melted, and to carefully trim up those plastic surfaces.

This list is also made based on good old-fashioned play value, durability and the problems my oldest daughter has experienced with her collection of Palisades Micronauts. So most of the ones I'm suggesting in this article feature the kid-friendly quality I remembered from my childhood Micronauts. Rachael's Emperor and several of her Pharoids have spent over a week getting squashed under couch cushions and come away no worse for it. They've shared parts with her vintage Micros, and suffered some of the exact same normal play wear, part-loss and breakage my collection did when I was a child.

...So, as you can see, this gives you a list of between 20-30 excellent Micronaut toys to shop for. That's nearly as many as Mego offered in the full run of their domestic figure series!!!

AcroRay
AcroRayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949450347665210583noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1890687187683893053.post-10219266685291386702010-08-03T11:23:00.001-05:002010-08-03T14:42:35.804-05:00Time to launch!I've let this blog space languish unused for too long!

Shortly I'll begin posting articles of information I hope Micronaut collectors will find useful.

Coming soon, some "Sure Bets" among some controversial Micronaut toys...AcroRayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08949450347665210583noreply@blogger.com0
